(Scarborough, Maine)- The SUNY Canton men's soccer team saw their season come to a close on Friday as they lost to No. 2 University of Maine at Machias 4-1 in the first round of the Sunrise Conference tournament in Scarborough, Maine. The Roos, the No. 3 seed, finish the year at 10-6-2 while the Clippers improved to 10-5-2 and will face top-seed University of Maine at Fort Kent in the championship game on Saturday.
SUNY Canton fell behind 2-0 at halftime despite outshooting Machias 9-6 in the first half. All nine shots missed their mark though as the Roos didn't have a shot on goal in the half.
The Clippers got on the board in the 18th minute when Pat Corliss took a through pass from Anthony Martiniano and drilled a shot past Roos goalie Eamon Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). In the 28th minute Martiniano set up Greg Dawson off a direct kick for the Clippers second goal and that lead would carry into the break. Machias stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute when Tom Erlenbach headed a corner kick right to the foot of Devon Whitbeck who quickly deposited the ball in the goal. The Clippers final goal came with just over 10 minutes left in regulation when Pablo Salas nailed a direct kick from about 30 yards out.
The Roos finally got on the scoreboard with 7:36 remaining when Moubarak Agoro (Bronx, N.Y.) scored unassisted.
Case finished with five saves as did Kyle Lancaster for Machias. All of their saves came in the second half.
