(Morrisville, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's basketball team posted an 87-83 overtime win over Morrisville State College Wednesday night in Morrisville. The Roos moved to 1-3 while the Mustangs dropped to 0-1.
SUNY Canton connected on 11 3-pointers and shot 47 percent from the field Wednesday night.
The Roos were ahead 40-33 at halftime and were outscored 41-34 in the second half but still had a chance to win the game in regulation. Tony Valentin (Perth Amboy, N.J.), who had another stellar night with 31 points, had given the Roos a 74-72 lead with a two point basket and a free throw with time winding down in the second half.
But the Mustangs Andrew Van Dyke kept the game alive and sent it into overtime scoring a layup with two seconds left to deadlock the game at 74-74.
The Roos hot shooting continued in the extra session as they hit 4 of 6 shots from the field and went 5 for 6 from the free throw line to secure the win. Valentin and Deric Alston (Jacksonville, N.Y.) each sank a three-pointer in overtime and converted key free throws down the stretch. Valentin sank two from the line and Alston had one plus another two-point basket. Jeff Greneir (Whitehall, N.Y.) also sank a pair from the free throw line in overtime as the Roos shot 72 percent from the line for the game.
Valentin finished with four three-pointers and he shot 9 for 10 from the free throw line and added nine assists and seven rebounds.
Alston finished with a season-high 20 points, four boards and three assists. Grenier grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with five points and Tony Parker (Sodus, N.Y.) added 14 points and five rebounds.
Kyle Gordon led Morrisville with 23 points, four steals and three assists. Hodges Sneed had 18 points and six rebounds, and Van Dyke finished with six points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
