(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team wrapped up the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League regular season title on Saturday and earned a berth in the ACHA Division I national tournament as they rolled over 17th-ranked Robert Morris University (Pa.) 7-1 at the Canton Pavilion. The Roos won their fourth straight game improving to 11-1 in the ECHL and 14-10 overall.
SUNY Canton has two league games left in the regular season and the Colonials (10-3 ECHL), who are in second place, have one and even if the Roos lose their final two games and Robert Morris wins SUNY Canton hold the head-to-head tiebreaker after sweeping this weekend. The regular season champions of the ECHL receive an automatic berth into the national tournament March 6-10 hosted by the other Robert Morris University in Bensenville, Ill.
The Roos have put on a startling offensive performance the past two weeks scoring a total of 37 goals during their four-game streak. Defensively they have allowed just six goals during that stretch and equally impressive has been their special teams play. After recording six power play goals on Friday in the 10-4 win over the Colonials, the Roos pumped in four more on Saturday.
The game on Saturday was marred by numerous penalties as frustrations mounted for Robert Morris who was whistled for 26 penalties including a game misconduct and a disqualification after senior forward
Dan Don (Gouverneur, N.Y.) was speared midway through the third period.
Robert Morris did come out strong to start the first period on Saturday looking to get back on track after being pummeled on Friday generating three quick shots that were turned aside by
Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) who 19 saves.
The Roos pushed right back and
Adam Fedor (Orleans, Ontario) got their torrid offense started scoring at the 4:59 mark igniting a run of four straight goals to end the first period.
SUNY Canton tacked on two more goals in the second period before Merrow's shutout bid was stopped when the Colonials Trey Milstead scored a short-handed goal with 54 seconds left in the period.
Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) added the final goal for SUNY Canton at the 11:57 mark of the third period.
Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist for the Roos.
Eric Cook (Cary, N.C.),
Brad Wilson (Ottawa, Ontario) and
John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) also scored.
Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) contributed three assists and
Andrew Royce (Somers, Conn.) had two.
Phil Salerno had 16 saves and Robbie Fallick had 11 for the Colonials in goal.
