Men's Ice Hockey Top Seed in ECHL Tournament

(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team will look to add another championship to their resume this weekend as they will be the top seed in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League tournament in Rochester.

The Roos (17-10), who won the ECHL regular season title, will open the tournament Friday morning against No. 8 University of Rochester at 11 a.m. at the Genesee Valley Ice Rink.  The Roos trounced the Yellowjackets in both meetings this season winning 16-0 and 15-0.  The semifinals will be Saturday night and the championship game slated for Sunday afternoon.

SUNY Canton, ranked 23rd in the latest ACHA Division I national poll, is currently riding a seven-game winning streak and they have been an offensive juggernaut during that stretch.  They have outscored their opponents 67-12 and their closest game was a 4-3 win over Syracuse University in their final regular season game.

The Roos are averaging 6.1 goals per game and are out shooting teams by a 35 to 29 margin.  SUNY Canton has 15 players that have scored at least 10 points and nine that have surpassed the 20-point mark.

Freshman forward Adam Fedor (Orleans, Ontario) leads the team with 21 goals and 22 assists for 43 points.  Freshman forward Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) has 10 goals and 26 assists for 36 points and freshman forward John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) has 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points.

Senior Scott Zaryski (Oswego, N.Y.) leads all SUNY Canton defenseman with 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points. Freshman defenseman Brad Wilson (Ottawa, Ontario) is right behind Zaryski with nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points.

Junior Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) has logged 1,468 minutes in goal playing in 25 of 27 games.  Merrow is 15-10 and has a 3.15 goals-against average and a .888 save percentage with one shutout.  Sophomore Chris Lee (Gansevoort, N.Y.) is 2-0 in four games with a 2.26 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage with one shutout.

On a side not senior Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.) needs just four points to join the 100-point club joining fellow senior Mark Talamo (Oswego, N.Y.) who surpassed the milestone two weeks on Jan. 29.
