Women's Basketball Falls to Fort Kent in Sunrise Conference Championship

(Concord, N.H.)- The No. 3 SUNY Canton women's basketball team lost in the championship game of the Sunrise Conference tournament as they fell to top-seeded University of Maine at Fort Kent 86-49 on Sunday at New Hampshire Technical Institute.  The Roos end the season 12-13.

SUNY Canton came out flat against the Bengals after an emotional come from behind win over Presque Isle in the semifinals.

On the flip side Fort Kent, who won their third straight title, used a strong start to each half to take control of the game.

The Bengals reeled off an 11-2 run to start the game, including nine points from Talisha Herring who matched SUNY Canton's first-half output with 21 points.  Herring scored seven more points and the lead swelled to 27-9 as SUNY Canton went scoreless for an eight-minute stretch.

SUNY Canton did put together a little run of their own late in the first half with eight consecutive points before another Herring layup made it 41-21 at half.  Fort Kent also used a 16-6 run to start the second half.

Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line for 20 points, 14 coming in the second half, to lead the Roos.

Senior Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) scored eight points in her final game for SUNY Canton.  Kirsten Morley (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) added seven points and three rebounds.  Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) contributed six points, three rebounds and three steals.  Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) had three points, four rebounds and four assists.  Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.) had three points and Emily Bush (Heuvelton, N.Y.) two.

Herring finished with 25 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Bengals.  Kristen Violette added 15 points and seven rebounds.  Morgan Chasse also had 15 points and Amber Garrison chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.
