Dominic Creazzo connects for a hit against Cornell
(Cocoa Beach, Fla.)- The SUNY Canton men's baseball team kicked off their spring training trip dropping a twinbill to Cornell College of Iowa 17-6 and 9-4 in Cocoa Beach.
In the opening game SUNY Canton scored three runs in the third and three more in the fourth. In the third Ricky Davidson (Ashburn, Va.) led off with a single and advanced to third after Nate Besaw (Massena, N.Y.) walked and Tom Darling (Oswego, N.Y.) reached first on a fielder's choice. The Roos then loaded the bases and Davidson scored when Jared Wallace (Canton, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch.
Dominic Creazzo (Massena, N.Y.) then drove in two runs with a single but the Roos stranded two runners aboard when Richard Flood (Staten Island, N.Y.) flew out to right field.
In the fourth inning the Roos quickly fell behind with two outs before Besaw reached second on a throwing error and then scored on a Darling RBI single. Darling advanced to third following single from Michael Zelyez (Brasher Falls, N.Y.) and then both of them scored off wild pitches. Matt Myers (Brandon, Vt.) then struck out to end the inning.
Creazzo finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Matthew Fallon (Pierrefonds, Quebec) took the loss on the mound as he went 3 1/3 innings allowing three hits and seven walks with no strikeouts. Brandon Robinson (Lisbon, N.Y.) went 1 2/3 innings and gave up four hits and four walks with one strikeout.
Andrew Patzke went 2-for-2 and drove in four runs for Cornell. Adam Butler struck out seven and allowed four hits and four walks in four innings on the mound.
In the nightcap the Roos scored one run in the second off an RBI-single from Robinson, two runs in the sixth off RBI ground outs from Robinson and Davidson, and then one more in the seventh by an RBI-single from Zelyez.
Ben Rockwood (Gouverneur, N.Y.) and Josh Hartle (Harrisville, N.Y.) each had a hit and a run for the Roos. Josh Harvey (North Creek, N.Y.) surrendered nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts in four innings and Myers gave up two hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts in two innings.
Matthew Shimanovsky went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead Cornell. Charlie Muir struck out eight batters in five innings.
