(Lynn, Mass.)- The SUNY Canton women's softball team pulled off a late game rally to force extra innings against Fisher College in game one of a doubleheader on Easter Sunday in Lynn, Mass., but a clutch hit in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Falcons to a 12-9 win. Fisher earned the sweep with a 10-2 win in the opener.
SUNY Canton scored two runs in the fifth, four more in the sixth and then one in the top of the seventh off an RBI-single from
Jenifer Shaw (Helendale, Calif.) to tie the game at 7-7. Shaw also completed a key double play in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
After SUNY Canton went ahead 9-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, the Falcons trimmed the lead to one in the bottom half of the inning, and then loaded the bases for Mika Wilson who blasted a grand slam to win the game.
Shaw, who had two doubles and a single, started the game on the mound for the first time in her career and gave up seven runs in the first two innings.
Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) who had pitched the first three games of the four-game series, came on in relief and shut the Falcons down until the eighth inning.
Colleen Rivers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) Carolina Olivares (Adelanto, Calif.), Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.), and
Vickie Lynch (Howard Beach, N.Y.) each added a single for the Roos.
In the opening game the Falcons took advantage of several Roos errors and Brittany Calderon limited SUNY Canton to just two hits. Fisher scored three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth to pull away for the win.
