(Lynn, Mass.)- No. 3 SUNY Canton dropped a heartbreaking 7-6 decision in 11 innings to No. 2 University of Maine at Presque Isle Friday night in the opening round of the Sunrise Conference baseball tournament at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass.
The Roos fell to 3-23-1 and will face No. 4 Vermont Technical College in the second round on Saturday. They need to beat the Green Knights to continue their run in the tournament. If they win they play in the late game on Saturday against the winner of Presque Isle and top-seeded Fisher College who beat the Green Knights 14-2 in the other first round game.
SUNY Canton led 3-1 after four innings on Friday and then were clinging to a one-run lead at 4-3 after six. The Owls were able to tie the game with one run in the top of the eighth to send the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th, the Roos posted two runs in the top of the 11th.
Jared Wallace (Canton, N.Y.) reached base on an error and then
Ricky Davidson (Ashburn, Va.) came in to pinch run and stole second. Davidson was hurt on the play and pulled for
Josh Hartle (Harrisville, N.Y.) who scored the first run on another Presque Isle error. After
Bryan Duval (Norfolk, N.Y.) walked he eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from
Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.).
In the bottom of the 11th the Roos got the Owls first batter to fly out. The next two batters reached base on an error and a walk and then the Roos got another out by a strikeout. Stephen Thorne then ripped an RBI single to close the gap to 6-5. The next batter for Presque Isle drew a walk and Corey Harding then won the game with a walk off two-out, two-run single to centerfield.
Dominic Creazzo (Massena, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run for the Roos.
Matt Myers (Brandon, Vt.) added a double, two runs and an RBI.
