(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's basketball team handed out their team awards recently at a spring picnic in Canton.
Head coach Keith Sullivan honored four of his players.
Sophomore guard
Deric Alston (Jacksonville, N.C.) was named the Most Valuable Player. Alston was the only player to start all 24 games this year and he averaged 12.5 points and 3.7 rebounds. He was second on the team in assists (58), steals (21) and minutes played (31.6) and shot 46 percent from the field nad 72 percent from the free throw line. Alston was usually called on to guard the opposing team's top players.
Sophomore forward
Jeff Grenier (Whitehall, N.Y.) was named the Most Improved Player. Grenier averaged 4.9 points and was second on the team in rebounding with 6.2. He shot 41 percent from the floor and also had four steals and five blocks.
Senior forward
Jamelle Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior guard
Josh Wilson (Chaumont, N.Y.) were each given a Coach's Award. Smith averaged 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds and Wilson dropped in 2.7 points per game.
