Canton, NY – Three-time Olympic gold medalist and member of Team Canada Women's Ice Hockey Gillian Apps will be assisting the SUNY Canton women's ice hockey program during the 2014-15 season.
Apps, who won three straight gold medals during the 2006 (Turin), 2010 (Vancouver) and 2014 (Sochi) Winter Olympic Games with Team Canada, is taking a break from playing competitively and will serve as a volunteer assistant coach. Apps will be working with first year Head Coach David LaBaff, who served as the Roos assistant coach the past two seasons.
"I got an e-mail from David (LaBaff) asking if I could come out and help with the girls and get to know the team a little bit," Apps said. "I'm not playing right now, taking a little bit of time off from hockey, so it's a great opportunity to give back to the game and meet some of the girls here."
Apps is a 2007 graduate of Dartmouth University where she appeared in 113 games scoring 90 goals and dishing out 68 assists for 158 points. Her family is no stranger to hockey. Her father Syl Apps Jr., played for three NHL teams from 1970 to 1980. Her brother, Syl Apps III also competed at Division I Princeton University. Meanwhile, her grandfather Syl Apps won three Stanley Cups in the 1940s as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs and is enshrined in the NHL Hall of Fame. He also represented Canada competing in pole vault at the 1936 Olympics.
"I couldn't ask for a better role model and teacher to have on the ice with us," Coach LaBaff said. "Gillian has won at the highest levels of women's hockey, and her contribution to the team is something most Division III hockey players don't get to experience."
The Roos return to the ice this weekend when they travel to take on Division I Sacred Heart in a pair of contests on Friday and Saturday. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
