(Potsdam, N.Y.)- Despite a career high 20 points from Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) and a strong second half SUNY Canton couldn't overcome Clarkson University as they lost to the Golden Knights 58-49 in a non-conference women's basketball game Friday night in Potsdam. The Roos dipped to 1-5 overall while Clarkson evened their record at 3-3.
Lottie came off the bench to connect on 7 of 10 shots from the field and 6 of 8 from the free throw line in just 17 minutes. She also had three rebounds and one steal in her best game so far as a Roo.
Neither team shot particulary well as the Roos finished at 34 percent from the field and the Golden Knights shot 35 percent from the floor. SUNY Canton did fair better at the free throw line connecting on 15 of 20 from the stripe while Clarkson hit just 13 of 23 free throw attempts.
SUNY Canton scored the first five points of the game on a 3-pointer from Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) and a jumper from Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.).
The first half would prove to be a low scoring affair as SUNY Canton found themselves ahead just 9-8 with 10 minutes elapsed in the game.
Clarkson responded with a 5-0 run over the next two minutes to take a slim lead. A pair of free throws from Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) trimmed the lead to two points at 13-11 with just over seven minutes remaining.
Clarkson, thanks to the outside shooting of Katie Goldberg, then closed the first half on a strong run to take a 30-18 lead into the locker room. Goldberg hit three of her four 3-pointers during that 17-7 run for the Golden Knights.
Clarkson kept their lead for all of the second half despite being outscored 31-28 in the final 20 minutes. The Roos crawled back from a double-digit lead and trimmed it to a seven-point advantage following a Lottie jumper with seven minutes on the clock.
The Golden Knights answered with six straight points to again take a double digit lead. SUNY Canton didn't go away and again got within single digits at eight points following a layup from Brittany Crump (North Lawrence, N.Y.) with 4:03 left but that's as close as the Roos could come.
LaFave finished with nine points and six rebounds. Sedlacek contributed five points, five rebounds and two assists and Whitney Perkins (East Greenbush, N.Y.) added three points, six rebounds and three steals for the Roos.
Carey Turner tossed in 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Clarkson. Chrissy Scanlon added 13 points and Goldberg finished with 12.
