(Canton, N.Y.)-
Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) scored 24 points helping the SUNY Canton women's basketball team hold off Fisher College 57-48 Saturday night at Maxcy Hall in Potsdam. The Roos snapped a two-game skid and improved to 3-2 in the Sunrise Conference and 6-9 overall.
SUNY Canton trailed 23-22 at halftime after shooting just 25 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
The Roos nearly doubled that percentage in the second half as they were able to out score the Falcons 35-25.
Neither team was able to make any defining runs in the second half as the score remained close for most of the final 20 minutes.
SUNY Canton was finally able to pull away after LaFave buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Roos up by six at 51-45. A pair of free throws by the Falcons trimmed the lead back to four but then LaFave scored again on a layup off a nice feed from
Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) with 1:27 left.
Teresa Morley (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) then hit two of four free throws in the final minute and came up with a steal with 30 seconds left to seal the victory.
The Roos also shot a season-high 84 percent from the line. LaFave, who also had seven rebounds, was 5-for-5.
Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.) and
Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) each went 6-for-6 from the stripe and had eight points apiece.
Morley finished with four points and nine rebounds and Kenyon and
Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) each contributed four points apiece.
The Falcons were led by Tiffany Beckman who posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Leslie Wadhams added 15 points, nine coming from free throws.
