Women's Basketball Rolls Over St. Joseph 69-49

(Potsdam, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team used a dominating start to the second half to cruise past the College of St. Joseph 69-49 for their second straight win Sunday afternoon in Potsdam.  The Roos moved to 4-2 in the Sunrise Conference and 7-9 overall.

After going up by 10 points at halftime, 37-27, SUNY Canton opened the second half with 14 straight points and held the Fighting Saints scoreless for five minutes and 19 seconds.  Teresa Morley (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) scored eight of her team-high 14 points during that decisive stretch.

The Roos held St. Joseph to just 22 second-half points and 29 percent shooting from the field. 

SUNY Canton also forced 22 St. Joseph turnovers, 14 coming off steals as three players recorded at least three led by Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.) and Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) who had four each.  Morley finished with three steals to go along with eight rebounds.

Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) added 12 points and six rebounds for SUNY Canton.  Shoen finished with 11 points and five boards.  Kenyon also had nine assists and six rebounds.

St. Joseph was led by their talented frehshman Brittney Garrow who recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 25 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks.  Garrow, who leads the conference in scoring, drilled five 3-pointers.  Amanda Howard added 13 points and six rebounds.

Carolina gets the nod after batting an impressive .882 in a four-game sweep of Vermont Technical College.  

The junior was named the Sunrise Conference Player of the Week after she belted three doubles and two triples, drove in 15 runs and scored 10 times.  

She went 4-for-4 twice, the second time finishing with seven RBIs, and she had four hits in three out of the four games.

Olivares leads the conference batting .594.  She is second in triples (2), third in RBIs (16) and tied for fifth in doubles with three.

Matthew receives the award after batting .667 in six games this week finishing with five RBIs and four runs.  

He was named the Sunrise Conference Player of the Week after going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in a 6-5 loss to St. Michael’s College.  He also went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and two runs in an 8-5 win over Vermont Technical College.

In addition he struck out eight batters and allowed just five hits in another 11-1 win over the Green Knights.

Fallon is batting .393 with four doubles, a triple and five RBIs.  He's one of the top pitchers in the conference as he is second in both strikeouts (18) and opponents batting average (.234) and third in both earned-run average (6.04) and innings pitched (22.1).
