(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team will be the No. 3 seed in the 2009-10 Sunrise Conference basketball tournament Feb. 27-28 at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, N.H.
The Roos will play No. 2 University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m in the second semifinal game. Top-seeded and defending champions University of Maine at Fort Kent will play No. 4 University of Maine at Machias in the other semifinal game at 1 p.m. The championship game is on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II national championship in March.
SUNY Canton and Machias were tied at the end of the regular season at 8-4 in conference play but the Roos won the tie-breaker by beating Fort Kent, who swept the Clippers in two games.
The Roos lost two games to Presque Isle during the regular season losing 79-74 in Maine and 57-53 at home. In the second game SUNY Canton rallied back from a 19-point deficit in the second half but came up just short. Both teams met in the first round of last year's conference tournament with the Owls coming out ahead 64-53.
SUNY Canton is led by junior forward Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) who is averaging 15.0 points and 6.6 rebounds a game while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the free throw line.
Freshman forward Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) is adding 8.3 points and 3.9 rebounds a game. Sophomore Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) had dished out a team-high 52 assists and made 29 steals. Kenyon is also scoring 7.5 points and grabbing 4.2 rebounds a game.
Senior Julie Vander Wiel (Malone, N.Y.) is contributing 6.8 points and 4.1 rebounds. Freshman Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.) is averaging 5.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.1 steals.
